A pair of natural travertine bookends in a stepped arch shape, each about 12 x 14 cm at the base and 18 cm tall. They are for a bookshelf, a desk or a console, where they hold a short row of books upright and still look like objects in their own right when the books come out.
The arch steps back in thin layered ridges, so the stone throws a set of fine lines of light and shadow. Travertine is a warm, porous limestone with soft banding and small natural pits, and the two halves rarely match exactly, which is part of the reason to choose stone over cast resin.
Stone has the weight that light metal bookends lack, so the books stay put without a lip sliding under them. Use them as a pair at each end of a row, or split them across two shelves as small sculptures. Because travertine is natural, colour, pores and banding vary. Dust with a soft dry cloth and keep them away from water and acids. A good gift for a reader or a new study.
